Achilleion
The stunning appearance of this stately palace takes the visitor back in history to when the palace was inhabited by two great figures from European history whose only common bond was their adoration for Corfu, Greece and its culture, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as ‘Sissi’) and Kaiser William II of Germany.

Empress Elisabeth built the palace in 1890 to escape the tragedies of her life, and William II purchased it after her untimely death. William II, however, never had a chance to enjoy the palace’s beauty because of WW I that broke out, from his own doing.

Since 1962 and after extensive restoration has been used as a museum.

Vlacherna Convent

It is probably the most photographed and visited Corfiot landmark. The 17th century chapel turned into convent is devoted to Virgin Mary Vlacherna and stands on a little rocky island close to the southern tip of the Kanoni peninsula. It is open to the public all year round and everybody can enjoy its beauty and tranquillity.

Pontikonissi

It is a picturesque isle just off the coast of Corfu. Boats depart frequently to the isle to visit the Byzantine church and sit in the cafe that is located amongst the trees.

Kanoni offers an excellent view of Pontikonissi and Vlacherna Convent.

Old town

The whole of Corfu town’s historic center is a monument. Narrow paved lanes (kantounia) with hung out laundry, flowering bougainvilleas, buildings with traces of Venetian, French and British influence attract any visitor. Local history, culture and tradition are thoroughly protected in museums and collections. The medieval fortresses and the peripheral fortifications compose a unique architectural ensemble, which was added in 2007 to the list of UNESCO”S World Heritage Monuments.

Spianada

Spianada is the main square of the town and the central meeting spot for locals and visitors. It was constructed to resemble the European Royal Gardens. It is the largest square in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. During the summer months all 18 philarmonic bands of the island, take their turn to perform at the Palco (Bandstand).
