Vlacherna Convent
It is probably the most photographed and visited Corfiot landmark. The 17th century chapel turned into convent is devoted to Virgin Mary Vlacherna and stands on a little rocky island close to the southern tip of the Kanoni peninsula.
It is open to the public all year round and everybody can enjoy its beauty and tranquillity.
Pontikonissi
It is a picturesque isle just off the coast of Corfu. Boats depart frequently to the isle to visit the Byzantine church and sit in the cafe that is located amongst the trees.
Kanoni offers an excellent view of Pontikonissi and Vlacherna Convent.
The Byzantine Church of St. Jason and St. Sosipatros
A beautiful Byzantine domed church was built in the 11th century and is filled with Byzantine art of the 11th and 12th centuries. It is the oldest Christian church in Corfu in operation nowadays.
Mon Repos
Built in 1831 as a summer residence by British Commissioner Sir Frederick Adams, the Mon Repos Palace is located atop a hill within a 250 acre park in the middle of Paleopolis (Ancient Corfu Town). It has been the birthplace (1921) of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Recently has been magnificently restored and is now a fabulous museum housing many of the Islands treasures.
Corfu Town
The whole of Corfu town’s historic center is a monument. Narrow paved lanes (kantounia) with hung out laundry, flowering bougainvilleas, buildings with traces of Venetian, French and British influence attract any visitor. Local history, culture and tradition are thoroughly protected in museums and collections. The medieval fortresses and the peripheral fortifications compose a unique architectural ensemble, which was added in 2007 to the list of UNESCO’S World Heritage Monuments.
The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortification works in Europe. This fortress was constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of a former Byzantine castle.
To make it more secure, they made an artificial fosse and thus they separated the fortress from the mainland. The fortress was connected to the land by a movable, wooden bridge.
Spianada
Spianada is the main square of the town and the central meeting spot for locals and visitors. It was constructed to resemble the European Royal Gardens. It is the largest square in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. During the summer months all 18 philarmonic bands of the island, take their turn to perform at the Palco (Bandstand).
