The landscape is enchanting. Besides the main beach, there are paths leading to smaller bays, appropriate for swimming.

Paleokastritsa is chiefly memorable for the exceptional scenery along with the superb beaches. On a sheer hillside stands the famous monastery of Virgin Mary, established in 1225.

The Monastery of Virgin Mary of Paleokastritsa

The early13th century monastery of Virgin Mary of Paleokastritsa stands on a sheer hillside full of wild trees and olive trees facing the deep blue sea. This majestic monastery is home to 8 Greek Orthodox Monks. They conduct traditional masses, provide generous hospitality, and offer regular tours of the grounds and museum located within. The visiting tourist will find magical qualities throughout the grounds and breathtaking scenery revealed at every turn.

The stunning appearance of this stately palace takes the visitor back in history to when the palace was inhabited by two great figures from European history whose only common bond was their adoration for Corfu, Greece and its culture, Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as ‘Sissi’) and Kaiser William II of Germany.

Empress Elisabeth built the palace in 1890 to escape the tragedies of her life, and William II purchased it after her untimely death. William II, however, never had a chance to enjoy the palace’s beauty because of WW I that broke out, from his own doing. Since 1962 and after extensive restoration has been used as a museum.

Corfu Town

The whole of Corfu town’s historic center is a monument. Narrow paved lanes (kantounia) with hung out laundry, flowering bougainvilleas, buildings with traces of Venetian, French and British influence attract any visitor. Local history, culture and tradition are thoroughly protected in museums and collections. The medieval fortresses and the peripheral fortifications compose a unique architectural ensemble, which was added in 2007 to the list of UNESCO’S World Heritage Monuments.
